Steve Kilburn was elected to represent Chatsworth at the 2009 election.
Steve and his wife Nataleen, who is a full-time secondary school teacher and qualified Town Planner, live in Carindale. Their daughter, Kate, graduated from the local San Sisto College in Carina in 2009 and now works in sales and administration. Their other daughter, Hannah, graduated from San Sisto College in 2010 when she served as the College Community Captain. Hannah is pursuing Tertiary studies in 2011. Steve's eldest daughter, Melissa, lives and works in North Queensland.
Steve has served as a Firefighter with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service for over 15 years, following in the footsteps of his father. He has a Diploma in Public Safety (Firefighting Management) as well as qualifications in Incident Management. Steve is a qualified Operations Officer, and has been trained in Swift Water Rescue and Vertical Rescue.
Before joining Queensland Fire and Rescue, Steve worked as an Aviation Firefighter for six years, providing fire and rescue response at the Brisbane and Cairns airports. Steve was Acting Inspector at the Whyte Island Recruit Training Facility, Port of Brisbane, immediately before his election to public office.
Steve also served in the Royal Australian Navy for nine years. Until recently Steve was an active Royal Australian Naval Reservist and he has contributed over 26 years of service to the Australian Navy.
Steve competed in the World Firefighters Games, Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield in 2004. He competed in the Mens 40-44 years 10,000m.
During the Cyclone Larry Relief Effort, Steve was the officer in charge who coordinated the fire and rescue response in the Mission Beach area, where he lived with his family at the time. He coordinated road clearing, helped tarp over 110 roofs, attended medical assists, organised the delivery of food and essential supplies, and provided critical support to the community relief centres. In recognition of his leadership and efforts to help those devastated by Cyclone Larry, Steve was awarded a Special Commendation.
Steve is a registered member of the Community Response to Extreme Weather (CREW) team as an emergency response volunteer. He is also a volunteer driver for the Carina Meals on Wheels and a member of the Camp Hill-Carindale Lions Club.
After 29 years of serving the community as a Firefighter and in the defence force, Steve is now pleased to be able to represent his community in State Parliament.
Steve serves as a member of the Parliamentary Law, Justice and Safety Committee and undertakes the role of Parliamentary Temporary Speaker. Steve is also a member of the following Ministerial Legislative Committees:
- Industrial Relations and the Attorney General
- Emergency Services, Corrective Services and Police
- Employment, Economic Development and Innovation
- Education
- Health
Steve likes going to the movies, singing while he gardens and is a fan of all types of sports. When the weather is fine, Steve likes going for a ride on his bike.
