FIRST EVER TUCKSHOP DAY
I’d like to add my congratulations to those of the Education Minister Cameron Dick on the first official ‘Tuckshop Day’ on Friday, November 4, 2011.
Each year on the first Friday in November we will celebrate the huge effort involved in providing students and staff with the fuel they need to learn and teach.
I encourage more members of the public, not just parents, to donate whatever time they can to their local school tuckshop.
Thanks to our current tuckshop workers and those who will volunteer in the future.
Yours faithfully

SAY THANKS TO GRANDPARENTS
With Grandparents Day (Nov 6) fast approaching, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Grandfathers, Grandmothers and Pops and Nanas in our local area.
This year Grandparents Day is 6 November and its theme is ‘Grandparents Rock’.
I look forward to seeing locals get behind Grandparents Day to thank the grandparents in their lives for their love and support.

CALL TO ARMS
Sporting teams across the country are being urged to wear yellow to raise funds in the fight against men’s cancers.
It’s a great way for teams to tackle cancer head on and gives sporting clubs from across the state a chance to show their support for cancer sufferers while keeping fit and healthy.
At least one third of cancers are preventable through a healthy lifestyle, which is why I encourage residents to get their clubs involved in the Call to Arms.
Not only is the Call to Arms a great opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause but it creates further health awareness amongst male spectators and teams.
For more information and to register your team visit www.calltoarms.com.au

GET SERIOUS ABOUT FIRE SAFETY THIS WINTER
Last year, fire fighters attended more than 478 house fires in Queensland during June, July and August. This equates to around five fires every day during the winter period across the State.
With people starting to use heaters, electric blankets and fireplaces, the risk of fire increases dramatically. This winter, households should be mindful of the danger room heaters pose to lives and property, especially when placed too close to bedding or clothing.
Residents should also devise and practice an emergency evacuation plan to activate in the event of a fire.
I encourage residents to take advantage of the free QFRS Safehome program during the winter months. I urge all households to take the time to book a free Safehome visit so they can be aware of the fire risks in their home and learn what to do if a fire occurs.
Yours sincerely

National Volunteer Week
This year, National Volunteer Week runs from 9 to 15 May and now is a great time to get involved in our community through volunteering.
Over the summer we had enormous interest from people wanting to help volunteer with the various emergency and relief organisations.
The people in these organisations are highly trained to perform difficult work.
If people are thinking they’d like to contribute their time to these services they need to contact them now and get trained in time for our summer storm season.
I encourage Queenslanders to offer their time in whatever way they can, there are lots of small things people can do that will make a big difference.

Young Volunteers Awards
The Bligh Government is calling on members of the community to acknowledge our remarkable young people and nominate them for a Young Volunteer Award.
The Queensland Young Volunteer Awards acknowledges volunteers aged 12 to 25 who make a difference in all aspects of our society and add to the vibrancy and cohesiveness of our state.
Awards will be presented in seven categories: arts and culture, community service, green, online, school action, social innovators and sport and recreation.
This year, award winners will receive $500 cash, a certificate of recognition and a personal development opportunity.
If you know an outstanding young volunteer or a group of young volunteers, I urge you to nominate them for these prestigious awards at www.volunteering.qld.gov.au

National Youth Week
National Youth Week runs from April 1-10 and I urge everybody to get involved and recognise the great work of young people in our community.
There are plenty of examples of young people in our community who are out there every day helping others through volunteer work and supporting their own family, friends and school communities.
Youth Week is not just about fun, but also about giving young people an opportunity to come together and celebrate being young and reflect on issues and subjects that matter to them.
I’ll also take this opportunity to ask young people to make the effort to contact me as their local representative to raise issues of concern to them they feel may have been overlooked.
For more information on Youth Week and events taking place throughout the week go to www.youth.qld.gov.au

Draft Gumdale Area Traffic Plan
Brisbane City Council have now released an Executive Summary for the Draft Gumdale Area Traffic Plan. This is the time for the community to advise Council how they feel about the proposed Traffic Plan.
The link to the draft report summary is:
http://roads.mipo.jsadigital.com.au/Documents/Download.aspx?id=823
The draft plan recommends that some of the major road corridors in the area need to be upgraded to prevent future growth in traffic on rural-residential roads such as Grassdale, Formosa, London, Boston and Archer Street and one of the key recommendations is that Old Cleveland Road (which is State controlled) needs to be widened from 4 to 6 lanes from the Gateway Motorway out to Moreton Bay Road.
I know that this is an important consultation period for the community and if you would like to speak with me regarding any aspect of the Plan please don't hesitate to give me a call.

Cyclone Yasi affects many Sth East Queenslanders
I have a growing awareness of the terrible outcomes caused by Cyclone Yasi in North Qld also affecting Brisbane residents who have family and other interests in the Tully, Cardwell and Mission Beach areas.
My heartfelt sympathies go out to the residents of the devastated regional districts, but I am also concerned for their anxious relatives who live in SEQ.
My wife grew up in Tully where her mother still lives, and one of her 3 sisters lives in Mission Beach with her young family, so I am very sensitive to the stress and sadness experienced by ‘away’ family and friends during and after this very severe event.
I extend an invitation to anyone with questions or concerns about the NQ recovery effort to contact my office if they feel I can be of help.
Kind regards

Show the love and use a condom this Valentine’s Day
Readers may be surprised to know that February 14 is more than just Valentine’s Day, it is also International Condom Day.
It is a timely reminder therefore, that while some people will be hoping to share the love this Valentine’s Day, appropriate precautions still need to be taken.
As the parent of young adults, I would urge all young people to practice safe sex as a rule. Statistically, those aged under 25 years are more likely to contract sexually transmitted infections.
Key points to remember are: don’t take risks with your sexual health; use condoms to prevent STIs and talk to your doctor about a sexual health check.

GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE IS A CALL AWAY
I am most relieved that no household in the Chatsworth electorate was inundated during the recent flood event. Before the flood peak I surveyed and door-knocked low-lying areas to check on local residents. Since the flood peak I have been involved in assisting with the flood relief effort in badly affected areas throughout Brisbane.
However, whilst there was no direct physical impact, many people in the electorate have tragically suffered the loss of businesses and work places, which will impact on them and their families emotionally and financially.
There are a range of Government assistance options available to people affected directly and indirectly by the flood and I urge anyone who has been impacted by the floods in any way to contact my office for assistance.
I would also like to thank the many Chatsworth residents and businesses that have contacted my office offering support for those who are trying to cope with loss on so many levels.
Kind regards

STAY SAFE ON THE ROAD THIS SUMMER
I am urging families to take care on the roads during the school holidays to help keep reducing the State’s road toll, which currently stands at 84 less than the same time last year.
During my time as a Firefighter, I have attended crashes and seen the terrible results of speeding, drink driving, driving tired or not wearing a seat belt. It is horrific to see families and lives torn apart as a result of a road crash.
While most of us will be spending the Christmas break with loved ones, hardworking police, paramedics and firefighters will be on duty.
Unfortunately, this time of year can be particularly challenging for community safety agencies, so it’s really important everyone takes care and does the right thing on the road.
I am calling on all of us to take extra care on our roads this Christmas holiday season and to not risk your life or the lives of others.

SAFE AND SOUND TO SCHOOLIES AND BACK
As with numerous other parents of graduating Year 12 students, my wife and I were somewhat anxious about our daughter attending Schoolies.
It seems we needn't have worried as all accounts show the high professional standards by which the week-long event was conducted.
There may be no safer place for our graduates to be celebrating than at organised Schoolies events, which are staffed and supervised by hard-working and skilled volunteers, chaplaincy services and emergency services.
We were very pleased with our daughter's ability to look after herself, but we know that the presence and input of caring and professional staffers and workers must be given credit for the overall success of Schoolies 2010.

YOUNG PEOPLE URGED TO BE CONSUMER SMART
Every year Australian’s are losing millions of dollars to scammers so it’s important for our youth to know how to protect themselves.
I encourage young people to access the consumer protection information available on the Get Out There! website. It offers some great tips on how to stay safe online by avoiding scammers.
Get Out There! is also a great resource if you’re considering signing up to a mobile phone plan, starting university or seeking a job, as well as pointers on how to negotiate Schoolies celebrations.
A key feature is the interactive budget planner, which enables users to manage their money and track how they use it.

TRANSLINK TICKETING CHANGES FOR SENIORS
I would like to share some good news for seniors and pensioners who use public transport.
A new capping and increased discount will come into effect from 17 January 2011.
After seniors and pensioners take two journeys on go card in one day, any extra journeys will be free. They can travel as much as you like on any one day for the price of just two journeys.
This is great news for those who like to do all their travel in one day, whether it be to do the shopping, visit family and friends or do volunteer work.
The Government is also increasing the discount for travelling on go card in the off-peak discount from 10 per cent to 15 per cent. This discount applies between for travel between 9:00am and 3:30pm and after 7:00pm on weekdays and on weekends and public holidays.
As your local member, I have been fighting for cheaper fares on public transport cheaper for seniors and pensioners. I am glad the government has listened and announced this new initiative.

Statewide Children’s Week celebrations take off

This year Queenslanders will be able to take part in many events including teddy bear picnics, pyjama days, art displays, mini Olympics, story-telling with local children’s groups and events at playgroups and child care organisations.
Children’s Week runs from October 23 to October 31 and continues to highlight the issues and needs of Queensland children and families.
It also reminds us of our responsibility to provide a safe and caring environment for our children’s growth in the early years.

Mental Health Week
I am writing to encourage strong community participation in Mental Health Week (Sunday 10 October to Saturday 16 October 2010).Mental Health Week provides an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our mental health and reducing the stigma attached to mental illness.
Almost half the Australian adult population will experience a form of mental illness at some stage during their life, yet two-thirds of those experiencing a mental illness do not seek treatment largely due to the stigma attached to it.
I hope there’ll be a strong show of support and goodwill generated throughout our community during Mental Health Week. For tips on how to be active, get connected and stay involved, people can go to http://www.health.qld.gov.au/mentalhealth/news/mhw_theme.asp.
